NC State University Jamf Migration: Action Needed for CALS Apple Device Users
NC State is moving university-managed Apple devices to a new Jamf environment. This is a university-wide change, not a CALS-only initiative.
Jamf is used to manage and secure university-owned Macs, iPads, and other Apple devices. If you do not use a CALS-managed Apple device, no action is needed.
What Apple device users need to do
To support the migration, devices must be able to run macOS 26 or iPadOS/iOS 26.
- If your Mac, iPad, or iPhone can update to version 26, please complete the update as soon as possible.
- If your device cannot update to version 26, contact CALS IT as soon as possible.
- CALS IT has been contacting users of devices that may not meet the migration requirements. These devices may encounter usability issues during or after the transition and may require individual support or replacement planning.
The migration is scheduled to start on September 4th, 2026. Updating your device when you get the Apple Notification will help minimize disruption.
What to expect during migration
Affected users may receive a prompt to migrate their device to the new Jamf environment.
- Macs: Migration is expected to take about 10 minutes when the operating system is current. A restart is not normally required.
- iPads and iPhones: Migration is expected to take about 10 minutes when the operating system is current. A restart is required.
- If you use GoodNotes on iPad make sure to enable cloud sync and backup your data.
- Use a reliable internet connection; VPN is not required.
- No data loss is expected, but backing up important files before migration is recommended.
- Following migration, ‘Self Service’ will become ‘Self Service+’ and have a refreshed look and a broader catalog of university-approved software. CALS-specific software and tools will remain available.
- Macs and iPads will receive the university eduroam certificate automatically. You do not have to install this yourself to connect to campus’ network.
Mac users may see temporary prompts related to CrowdStrike, Privileges, or Cisco AnyConnect during the transition. Please select OK if prompted. These are expected while the old management settings are replaced with the new settings. (ncsu.service-now.com)
